Ranch on notice...again

Vernon city council wants Historic O'Keefe Ranch to move into the 21st century in terms of its financial records.

Council has made next year's $100,000 grant for the ranch conditional on a comprehensive business plan and detailed financial statements.

“This gives O'Keefe Ranch a really good chance to fulfill its potential going forward much more than it is now,” said Coun. Scott Anderson who presented the motion to council on Monday. “Most members of council absolutely want to see O'Keefe Ranch succeed and thrive.”

Council wants the ranch to support itself and is slashing the current $150,000 grant by one-third next year.

However, the city is forking out another $40,000 to pay for completion of the ranch's business plan.

“All we did was give them $40,000 to develop a business plan so they can wean themselves off of the public purse,” said Bob Spiers, who pointed out the money would not come from taxpayers but excess 2016 revenue. “I have no objection to giving it another shot and I hope it works because we can't continue using the public purse.”
