Kal Lake Road delay?

Wildfires that have torn through the Cariboo region could delay a controversial road project in Vernon.

City of Vernon staff have warned council that BC Hydro was scheduled to replace power poles on Kalamalka Lake Road starting July 10th.

However the utility has sent notification that all hydro crews have been dispatched to repair downed power lines due to the wildfires in the province.

BC Hydro has a big job fixing damage caused by the wildfires.

At last count, hundreds of power poles had been lost as well as 47 transmission structures, 114 cross arms, 181 wire spans and 32 transformers.

Council was notified that the project was still on schedule and under budget but it is not known if the hydro issue will delay the project and, if so, for how long.

The west side of Kal Lake Road, including the multi-use path, has been paved from 14th Avenue to around the 800 block. Landscaping and the southern portion are underway.

The $3 million project was slated by businesses along the route who complained that the summertime work and planned closure would affect their bottom lines.
