It's not what most people expect from such a scenic town, but at times traffic in Enderby rivals the big city.
The quaint community 30 minutes from Vernon on Highway 97A has far surpassed predicted traffic levels, and that has city and provincial officials taking action.
Mayor Greg McCune said at times “it's pretty much wall-to-wall traffic.”
McCune said Enderby is like the “end of a funnel” with traffic coming from Salmon Arm, Sicamous, Highway 1 and surrounding areas as motorists head to 97A for the fastest route into the Valley.
“The Ministry of Transportation said we are up to 2024 traffic levels,” said McCune. “We weren't supposed to have this volume of traffic for another 10 years.”
McCune said the MOT is actively involved in finding a solution and has already made changes like changing stop light timing to improve traffic flow.
The ministry is also looking at replacing a pedestrian-controlled light at Knight Street with a permanent traffic light.
“They are going to do a traffic study. They want to know the type of traffic as well,” said McCune, adding Enderby can have up to 1,500 big rigs pass through the community every day.
