Ex-NHLers join Lumby fun

Organizers in Lumby are hoping to see some former NHL players partying in the village this weekend as this year's Kraft Hockeyville winner is announced.

Lumby is in a race with St. Isidore, Que. for the title.

Already, both communities have won $100,000 for renovations on their arenas. Major renos to the girls' change room are planned for the Pat Duke Memorial Arena.

“Former Red Wing and Rangers player Ed Johnstone will be on site,” said Angie Clowry, lead organizer. “As we've had Edmonton Oiler and Dallas Stars player Dave Oliver and Vancouver Canucks alumni Aaron Volpatti on the Pat Duke ice surface recently, we hope to see them and a few more join the celebration.”

Villagers are gearing up to celebrate their success with a day of fun ahead of NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman's announcement on Saturday, April 2 of who has taken the title.

Both CBC and Sportsnet will broadcast live from the North Okanagan community during the day and as the announcement is made around 4 p.m., said Clowry.

“Thanks to the Lumby Chamber of Commerce we will be putting up their big screen in the arena where we will all hear the Hockeyville announcement live together.”

Win or lose, people plan to enjoy themselves on Saturday.

“We are creating a community event that happens to tie into three other events going on in town that day,” said Clowry.

Events include:

  • 8 a.m. 55-home garage sale
  • 10 a.m. local business sidewalk sale
  • 11 a.m. store-front  scavenger hunt with Vancouver Canucks home game tickets up for grabs.

There is also a fundraiser for ALS at The Lumby Legion.

“We've got a kids' zone with face painting, balloon animals, bouncy castles, food vendors, ball hockey that will be centred around the Pat Duke Memorial Arena.

“As we are hoping for nice weather, we are asking families to join us with their lawn chairs, picnic lunch or enjoy food from the vendors.”

Lumby's fire department volunteers will be on hand with their trucks for parents to take pictures of their children.
