Car fire suspicious

RCMP are asking for the public's help after a car seemingly spontaneously went up in flames outside a Vernon home Monday around 4 a.m.

Vernon RCMP were dispatched to the suspicious vehicle fire in the 3000 block of 39a St. in Vernon. They found a 1997 VW GTI engulfed in flames, it was a total loss.

According to the registered owner, there was no insurance on the vehicle as he had just purchased it for the winter and he had not insured it or driven it yet which is why police are so confused by the fire.

"It appears as though this person bought the vehicle and had it delivered to his house, it hadn't been driven. For a vehicle to catch fire that had not been recently driven is completely suspicious. It was just sitting there," says RCMP Cpl. Gerry Kovacs.

"There have been some fires in garbage dumps and other suspicious fire activity in that area so we are just trying to put the pieces together," adds Kovacs.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Vernon RCMP or Call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
