CALGARY, AB - The UBC Okanagan Heat, in their first road game of the season, defeated the Mount Royal University Cougars 3-1 at Kenyon Court in Calgary on Friday night. The Heat took the first two sets, before dropping the third and closing out the win in the fourth. Set scores: 25-22, 25-18, 20-25, 25-20.

Playing away from home court didn’t seem at all detrimental to the Heat, as they put away 51 kills on a .177 hitting percentage. They significantly outhit the home team, as the Cougars finished with 42 kills on .092.

Michelle Jakszuk and Siobhan Fitzpatrick led the UBC Okanagan attack, finishing with 12 kills apiece. On the other side it was Alex Donaghy and Taylor Pelland, who finished with 11 and 10 respectively to lead MRU.

Coming into Friday night’s contest, the Heat’s Emily Oxland and Megan Festival were nearing the all-time service aces, currently held by Shanlee McLennan with 138. Oxland had no service aces in the match, staying one off the record with 137. Festival had three in the match, pulling within two at 136. Alberta's Kacey Otto also in the race and now has 132.

The third set was the best of the night for the Cougars. The Heat attempted 43 attacks in the set, but only put away 11 kills, and hit -.023. While MRU only hit .000 with eight kills in the set, it was enough to avoid the three-set sweep.

The Heat came out swinging to start the match, picking up right where they left off last weekend. The first and second sets saw UBC Okanagan put up big numbers while they jumped out to a 2-sets-to-none lead. They earned 17 kills (.308) in the first set, and 14 (.323) in the second, while holding the Cougars to nine (.103) and 12 (.212).

The fourth set clinched it for the Heat, although they didn’t return to the form they had earlier on. The Cougars had more kills in the set, with 12 compared to the Heat’s 9, but the UBC Okanagan front line kept MRU to a .068 hitting percentage, including 10 errors, on the home side’s 44 attacks.

The Heat (5-0) and the Cougars (3-2) will play again tomorrow night, with first serve set for 3 p.m. PST  at Kenyon Court in Calgary, AB.
