KELOWNA, BC -- The UBC Okanagan Heat women's soccer team fell on home turf by a final score of 2-0 to the visiting University of the Fraser Valley Cascades on Saturday afternoon, thanks primarily to the offensive efforts of leading scorer Gurneet Dhaliwal.
Nonis Field at the Okanagan campus saw a lot of back-and-forth play between the Heat and the Cascades, with the midfield seeing most of the action and the momentum never swinging fully in either team's favour.
The first goal of the match, and the only one in the first half, came in the 30th minute from second year UFV forward Gurneet Dhaliwal. Dhaliwal's fifth goal of the season came on a long shot from the top of the box, that went top left corner past a leaping Chloe Ainsworth.
The best UBC Okanagan chance of the first half came in the 3rd minute, when third year forward and Heat leading scorer Courtney Hemmerling broke free in the penalty area and put a low shot off the right post.
The second goal of the match came in the 68th minute, with fourth year Cascades forward Amanda Carruthers scoring her second goal of the season on an assist from Dhaliwal.
Late in the match, Hemmerling had a number of chances, making Cascades keeper Kayla Klim stop three good shots, in the 84th, 90th, and 93rd minutes. UBCO freshman Kylee Walker was also in Klim's lap following one of Hemmerling's shots with the ball floating free on the goal line. Klim was able to gain control before Walker had a chance to finish the job.
The UFV Cascades named keeper Kayla Klim their MVP of the match, and midfielder Maya Bandy was the match MVP for the UBC Okanagan Heat.
The UBC Okanagan Heat will play their match tomorrow at 1 p.m., Sunday September 25, when they host the fifth ranked Trinity Western Spartans at Nonis Field. The UFV Cascades will travel to Kamloops, where they will play the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack tomorrow at 1 p.m.
