UBC Okanagan held scoreless by Pandas

A split at home on the weekend for the women's soccer team after being held off  the scoreboard (3-0) by the Alberta Pandas. Back at home this Saturday (Sept 24) at 1 p.m.

KELOWNA, BC -- The Heat fall for the second time in 2016 losing to the University of Alberta Pandas soccer team 3-0 on Sunday at the Nonis Soccer field. With the loss the Heat's record drops to (2-2-0) and improves the Pandas to (3-0-1).

Two of the three goals scored by the Pandas were scored by first time Canada West goal scorers. Third year forward Karissa McNutt scored off of a penalty kick in the 68th minute of the game. A freshman from Edmonton and a product of Edmonton Green and Gold, Anna Dunn scored in the 74th minute, Dunn's marker was off of a well executed piece by the Pandas.

This was the first time the UBCO Squad was held off the score sheet for a match this season. Yesterday's player of the match with two goals, Courtney Hemmerling, had the two best opportunities for the Heat.

The closest attempt at a goal for the Heat came in the first half from the third year forward, who took a header to the ball in close range to the net and was denied by the Pandas goaltender, just minutes after challenging the Panda keeper Cassie Bazzarelli.

Bazzarelli ended up with the shutout and her third win of the season.

The Panda's coming off of 5-0 win the night before to the Thompson Rivers WolfPack came to play as the offensively gifted Edmonton squad opened up against the Heat with a 1-0 halftime lead.

In the 27th minute, second year midfielder Aly Parth scored the first goal of the game and her second of the season. With an open shot on the net, the business major took a clean shot on the left corner to start off with a 1-0 lead.

Just after the break the Pandas relentless on offense were able to make two more goals on net. The second goal of the game came in the 68th minute when a handball caused a penalty kick. The kick was taken by McNutt, who was able to score effectively on the left side of the net. Only six minutes later, Dunn finished with a well executed piece to end the game 3-0 for the Pandas.

As the Edmonton squad was able to effectively make use of their offensive line, they finished today's game with 14 shots, nine on net. UBC Okangan placed three of their four total chances on target.

As the weekend comes to an end the Pandas will travel back to Alberta where they will stay for next weekends home games against the University of Victoria Vikes and the UBC Thunderbirds.

UBC Okanagan will stay on home turf as Fraser Valley and the third ranked Trinity Western Spartans will travel to the Okanagan to play the Heat on Saturday (Sept. 24)  and Sunday (Sept. 25). Both games will begin at 1 p.m. at the Nonis Sports Field.
