This week for the Heat: This week marks the second week of regular season games for the Heat men’s soccer team. Coming off of their home opener with a win against the Victoria Vikes and followed that up with a tie against UBC, the Heat are looking to keep their momentum alive as they hit the road to face off against Trinity Western and Fraser Valley.

The first match will be played on the coast on Friday (Sept. 2) with a 7:15 p.m. start time at Rogers Park in Langley against Trinity Western. Followed by the second match on Saturday (Sept. 3) with a start time of 8 p.m. against Fraser Valley at MRC Sports Complex.

Current Form: The men had an incredible start to the regular season at home with two matches on the Nonis Sports Field. This was their first ever win against the Island squad and helped them build momentum into their second match against UBC where they tied with the perennial Pacific power T-Birds. Coming off of a win and a tie, the Heat will be looking to keep their second place spot as they take on two more BC teams.

Key Players: Second year, Luke Warkentin is taking leadership on the pitch as he was able to make his first regular season goal of the year against UBC last weekend to tie the game for his team. As a 5’11 forward Warkentin is quick off the draw and ready to attack at the net to score for his team. Rookie, Spencer Young has also made a quick impression on the pitch for the Heat as he was able to claim his first goal in Heat attire in the home opener against UVic. Claiming the goal in the 88th minute, the defender is ready to assist in the front of the field as well as defend his own near the his teams net.

Overall Head to Head (W-L-T) vs TWU (1-2-1): The Heat have yet to claim a win against Trinity Western since their first year in the CIS (2014-2015) and will be looking to this weekend on the Spartans turf.

Overall Head to Head (W-L-T) vs UFV (3-1-0): The Heat have been successful against the Cascades in previous seasons, with their last match being a (3-0) victory for the Heat, the Kelowna squad will be looking to keep the winning streak alive as they face off at Abbotsford Secondary.

Key performer: Luke Warkentin (Forward, 2nd yr. Surrey, BC): Leading the UBC Okanagan squad in his freshman season with four goals second year forward Luke Warkentin will be relied upon for his striking abilities even more in his sophomore season. The Heat finished 12th in the conference in goals scores with 12 in 2015, and as strong as their defense was it was finishing on offense that may have caused the squad to miss the playoffs for the first as the team struggled to score consistently all season long. Adding significance to Luke's role on the team is the loss of the team's second leading goal getter from last season in Enzo Paal. If Luke can continue his growth as an offensive dynamo in Canada West throughout his second campaign the Heat will be in good shape to make another run at the playoffs in 2016.

Spartans: On Friday the Heat will play Trinity Western, the Spartans, first in the Pacific standings and the only team in the Pacific Division to make it through week one with two wins. The match is at Rogers Field in Langley with a 7:15 p.m. start time.

Current Form: Opened the season on the road and won both. Friday (2-1) and then (2-0) on Saturday in a double header in Prince George versus UNBC, to start on a winning streak.

Key Players:  Elijah Adekugbe scored three of the Spartans four goals in Prince George and is already  third on Canada West in scoring. He was named the Canada West Male Second Star of the Week. Last year, he scored two goals in 12 games.

Team Stat: The Spartans opened the season on the road last season and went (2-0) as well, defeating TRU (3-1) and UBCO (1-0). They never won on the road again after those two matches and played out the season to a (3-5-2) record. TWU was (3-2-2) on their home pitch last season.

Jarvis Ambaka / STR / Maragoli, Kenya / 5
Kalem Scott / D / Comox, B.C. / 4

Key performer: Elijah Adekugbe (Midfielder / 3rd yr / Calgary) Adekugbe will anchor the Spartans midfield this year and will help fill the gap left by five-time conference all-star Brayden Gant. The third-year Calgary product started 11 of TWU's 12 regular season games last year and finished second on the team in points, with two goals and three assists. Adekugbe, who was recently ranked 25th in the PDL's 2016 top prospect list, is also coming off a summer in which he captained Calgary Foothills FC to PDL championship match.

Cascades: On Saturday the Heat will continue their campaign on the road as they will match up against Fraser Valley. With the first week of regular season finished, the Cascades will begin their season this weekend as they began with a bye weekend. The Cascades have wrapped up their preseason with a record of (2-2-2) and finished with a loss against Seattle Pacific.

Current Form: The Cascades had an opening-week bye in Canada West action but went (2-2-2) in the preseason. With wins over Corban University and Evergreen State.

Key Players: UFV returns a quartet of fifth year seniors: forward James Najman, midfielders Connor MacMillan and Justin Sekhon, defender Sahib Phagura and midfielder/defender Tammer Byrne – and a 2015 Canada West second team all-star.

Key performer: Connor MacMillan (Midfielder / 5th yr / Chilliwack, B.C.) MacMillan, a dynamic midfielder, tied for second on the Cascades during the 2015 regular season with three goals. But it was in the playoffs where he truly emerged as an elite talent in Canada West, registering three goals and an assist in three post-season matches to lead the Cascades to the conference bronze medal. MacMillan brings a rare level of creativity to the pitch, and is also a skilled finisher.
