Halcyon a slice of heaven

It features some of North America’s most restorative hot spring waters, and it’s just a four-hour drive from the Okanagan.

Halcyon Hot Springs, located 30 kilometres north of Nakusp in the Kootenays, is situated on Upper Arrow Lake, and the hot water that oozes from the ground can be beneficial to your physical and psychological health. The stunning vistas of the Monashee Mountains do not hurt, either.

“Halcyon water actually has a high amount of lithium in it, and that’s pretty unique,” Halcyon Hot Springs marketing co-ordinator Rina Tjoa says. “Not many hot springs in North America have such a high lithium content.”

Studies have shown that lithium water has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can actually regenerate pathways in the brain. Lithium also has anti-depressant properties.

Guests can take advantage of the minerals in a variety of ways. They can soak in the hot or warm pools, they can take a chilly dunk in the cold plunge, or they can go for a swim in the seasonal mineral pool.

The property featured the Halcyon Sanitarium until 1955, when the owner, General Frederick Burnham, decided the waters should be shared with the world. The water also contains sodium, magnesium, calcium and strontium, which are also believed to aid in a variety of medical conditions.

In fact, the water is so potent it was once bottled as a health tonic and shipped as far away as London.

The resort features a wide variety of lodging choices, including chalets, suites, cottages and cabins of many sizes, and the sightlines are stunning.

“What’s really special about Halcyon are the spectacular views of Upper Arrow Lake and the mountains,” Tjoa says. “It is a very special location.”

Soothing mineral pools are not the only attraction at Halcyon, as Kingfisher Restaurant offers a West Coast menu and stunning view through large windows. Most of the food served comes from within 150 kilometres of the restaurant, as it features fresh, local offerings and farm-raised meats.

Halcyon Hot Springs is open 365 days a year, as both the summer and winter seasons offer a variety of activities for visitors to enjoy.

And don’t forget about the day spa, which offers everything you could imagine when it comes to rest and relaxation.

“It’s a place to go to truly relax,” Tjoa says. “A place to escape the hustle and bustle.”
