When local businesses are doing well, economies thrive and communities are more successful and happier. But without dialogue and strong relationships, none of that can happen. That’s why a key goal for the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce is to connect communities, business and government through initiatives such as the Chamber Summit, which takes place on March 14 at 6 pm.
For members of the public, the most exciting part of this is the State of the City Dinner at the Plaza Hotel. “It’s the first time the mayor will address the community this year and an opportunity for him to provide an update on key developments, as well as communicating his goals for the future,” says Acacia Pangilinan, Interim Executive Director for the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce.
“Mayor Christian will take questions from members of the public who are present at the dinner so it’s a chance for community members to influence strategic direction too,” Pangilinan explains. “How the city is operating and developing impacts everyone. This event serves as a pulse check to the community, so the mayor can find out the public’s priorities and the public can help shape our community.”
The event will be live-streamed on the Kamloops Chamber’s Facebook page, allowing all community members to listen in, though only people who are at the event will be able to ask questions. During the day of March 14, the Chamber of Commerce’s Annual General Meeting will be taking place, where members can vote on the board of directors and debate issues and policies. “We’re currently working on policies that go to all levels of government and this AGM is where members can come to us and discuss issues,” says Pangilinan. “Connecting the business community with all levels of government is a key part of what we do, and it helps us all prosper. This event allows us to progress policy through government, and also to highlight that piece of our work.”
