Long time Kamloops resident, Sergei Tashlikowich didn’t particularly want to become a furniture retailer when he and his college buddies founded Wholesale Furniture Brokers in 2002. Fresh out of Thompson Rivers University’s business programme, they had lifestyle goals in mind. “We wanted the freedom to travel, work for ourselves and create something from scratch,” he says.

Cut to 16 years later and he’s the sole owner of Wholesale Furniture Brokers (he bought out the last partner in 2013) and absolutely passionate about furniture – specifically, providing a wide range of quality, but always good value for furniture and mattresses to customers across Canada. The company achieves this by offering online customers wholesale prices, and can deliver to most areas in Canada within fourteen days – much sooner if you’re local to their Kamloops headquarters. As well as offering a range of furniture from other suppliers, Wholesale Furniture Brokers has developed 6 of its own house brands across bedroom, living room, dining, patio and mattresses. When it comes to product design, it’s all about giving the customer options. “We are constantly watching what’s trending, and we focus on practicality too,” says Tashlikowich. “For example, we’re aware that homes and rooms are getting smaller, so we offer multifunctional products such as sectionals with sleeping and/or storage, beds and bunks with storage, and sectionals that can be oriented both left and right. We just know what our customers want and need.”

Tashlikowich is all about supporting his community. “We regularly donate to organizations like Big Brothers and Big Sisters and support Rotary events,” he says. “We’re also very involved with Kiva.org, a non-profit that facilitates micro-loans to entrepreneurs in third-world countries. We call our team members Warriors, and every week, we recognize one who goes above and beyond. They receive a $50 certificate to Kiva.org so they can support entrepreneurs around the world.”

As for those dreams of travelling the world, Tashlikowich has been there and done that. “We lived in Buenos Aires for a while, and Columbia too, and were able to run the business from there,” he says. “Now, I’m happily settled in Kamloops with girlfriend and our three children. I was born, raised and educated here, and this is where I want to be.”
