Hasek Undergoes Surgery

  • Detroit Red Wings goaltender Dominik Hasek will have groin surgery next week in his home country after playing just 14 games in a season in which he came out of retirement. The 39-year-old player will return to the Czech Republic from Detroit this week for the operation.
  • The NHL and the players' association have reserved two days each at the end of April and May to discuss the collective bargaining agreement.
  • The road became steeper for Canada to defend its title at the men's world under-18 hockey championship. A 2-1 loss to the U.S. Tuesday dropped Canada (3-1) to second in Group A. A win would have given Canada a bye to the semifinals. Instead, the U.S. (4-0) earned that right. The Canadian team will meet the third-place team from a deep Group B in Thursday's quarter-final.
  • Canada will travel to Romania this September in a bid to return to the elite World Group of Davis Cup tennis. The draw was made Tuesday, with Romania winning the right to host the tie.
  • Star midfielder Roy Keane is returning to the Ireland national team, two years after being kicked off the squad before the 2002 World Cup of soccer - a move that divided the nation. The Football Association of Ireland said Tuesday that the Manchester United and former Ireland captain had made himself available for selection immediately.
  • Two Florida newspapers dropped their challenge this week to a state law restricting access to autopsy photos that passed after the death of NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, citing a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision.
