Sports Announcer Suspended

  • The Vancouver Canucks/Calgary Flames playoff series resumes Friday in Vancouver with the Canucks up 1-0 in the best of seven series.
  • Ottawa radio host Don (Dandyman) Romani has been suspended indefinitely by The Team 1200 in the wake of on-air comments over Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer Tie Domi. It all started Tuesday afternoon when banter by Romani turned into suggestions that Domi hits his wife.
  • Despite a bad season by the Chicago Blackhawks, forward Tuomo Ruutu managed to cash in on several incentive clauses within his rookie contract. According to the Chicago Daily Herald, Ruutu will collect $1.2-million in individual performance bonuses on top of his $1.13-million base salary.
  • Bruce Edwards, the caddie whose struggle with Lou Gehrig's disease inspired longtime boss Tom Watson at last year's U.S. Open, died Thursday. He was 49.
  • New York Knicks forward Tim Thomas on Thursday was fined $75,000 for publicly criticizing the game officials after a 21-point defeat to the Indiana Pacers.
  • The Edmonton Journal reported Thursday that the Oilers are working to purchase a Western Hockey League franchise and bring it to Edmonton.
  • Champ Car officials have confirmed 18 cars will be on the starting grid for the season opening Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 18. Derrick Walker announced Thursday that he would be fielding a one car team for the 2004 season, the 14th year he has run a car in Champ Car. Walker did not reveal who his driver would be at this time, however, former Mi-Jack/Conquest driver Mario Haberfeld has been mentioned as a top candidate along with Canadian Michael Valiante.
