Update On NASCAR Plane

  • Crews on all-terrain vehicles recovered five bodies Monday and searched for five more from the wreckage of a plane carrying members and friends of Hendrick Motorsports, one of NASCAR's top teams. Federal investigators said they did not know what caused the Beech 200 King Air to crash Sunday en route from Concord, N.C., to Martinsville Speedway. The crash was on Bull Mountain in the foothills of the Appalachians, about 11 kilometres west of the track. The crash killed all 10 people aboard, including the son, brother and two nieces of team owner Rick Hendrick. Full story
  • Canadian Patrick Carpentier left hospital Monday under doctors' orders to rest for a few days after surviving a crash in Sunday's Champ Car race. Carpentier was knocked unconscious for several seconds after slamming into a cement wall and tire barrier at 250 kilometres per hour with four laps to go in the Lexmark Indy 300 at Australia. A CT scan at a local hospital indicated that Carpentier did not sustain any serious injuries and the 33-year-old native of Joliette, Que., said he expects to be cleared by doctors to compete in the last race of the season at Mexico City on Nov. 7.   • Dallas Cowboys receiver Terry Glenn will be out at least two weeks because of a sprained right foot. Full story
  • Calgary Stampeder president Ron Rooke met with CFL commissioner Tom Wright on Monday to protest his team's loss Friday night to the B.C. Lions. The Stampeders argue they were robbed of a last-play touchdown by a referee's call and that a racial slur was directed at a Calgary player by an official. The Stampeders lost the game 19-17 but television replays appear to back Calgary's claim the touchdown should have counted. Full story

  • Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has been charged by the English Football Association for an incident during Sunday's 2-0 win over Arsenal. The Dutch international appeared to intentionally stomp on the knee of Arsenal's Ashley Cole in the first half. He was given a foul but not carded by referee Mike Riley. Full story
  • In local ball hockey action, the Panthers maintained their perfect season by downing the Prospera Flyers 3-2 & 4-1. Ryan Caig had 3 goals and 2 assists to lead the Panthers, James Rayburn of the Flyers potted his league-leading 22nd goal of the season in a losing cause. In other games, the Crown Royals hammered the Lightning 6-1 & 7-0 The Black Ice Hurricanes split with the RoughRiders 4-3 & 2-3 The South Side Stranglers thumped the Grizz 4-1 & 3-0 The RoughRiders edged Mohawk 1-1 & 2-1 The Mission Wolf Pack split with the Molson Bandits 4-0 & 2-3 on the strength of Sean Lenarduzzi's 5th shutout of the season.
