Rice A Seahawk

  • The Seattle Seahawks finally got Jerry Rice on Tuesday.
The trade that sent the greatest receiver in NFL history from the Oakland Raiders to the Seahawks was formally announced after the league trade deadline passed in the afternoon. Seattle gave up a seventh-round draft choice in 2005 to acquire Rice, 42, who the Seahawks feel can help them despite his age. The trade reunites Rice, a 13-time Pro Bowl selection in his 20th NFL season, with coach Mike Holmgren.
  • Retired running back Ricky Williams is scheduled to meet Thursday with the NFL to seek permission to immediately rejoin the Miami Dolphins. Williams stunned the Dolphins when he retired just before the start of training camp. The announcement came after it was learned that Williams would be suspended four games by the NFL for failing a third drug test for marijuana use.
  • Antonio Bryant and Quincy Morgan are switching teams in a trade of receivers and former second-round draft picks hoping for fresh starts in new places. Bryant stayed with the Dallas Cowboys even after throwing a sweaty jersey onto coach Bill Parcells' face during a workout in June. But he was traded Tuesday to the Cleveland Browns for Morgan, who is from the Dallas area.
  • Keenan McCardell won't have to be unhappy in Tampa Bay anymore. The San Diego Chargers came to the rescue, acquiring the holdout receiver from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a third-round and sixth-round pick in 2005.
  • Canada Basketball dumped Jay Triano on Tuesday after some six years as men's team head coach and 11 years as a player - seven of them as captain.
  • The sentencing for St. Louis Blues player Mike Danton in a federal murder-for-hire case has been deferred until next month. Danton pleaded guilty July 16 to federal charges related to a murder-for-hire plot, a move that will almost certainly end his NHL career.
  • Montreal La Presse reports that Alouettes' coach Don Matthews will be sworn in as a Canadian citizen before the team's game Saturday against the Ottawa Renegades at Olympic Stadium.
  • Walker Racing will expand to a two car team for the final two races of the Champ Car season. Owner Derrick Walker confirmed he will enter a second car for David Besnard in this weekend's race in Australia.
