Host families desperately needed for NorthPaws with inaugural season on horizon

NorthPaws need billets

With opening night of their first West Coast League baseball season coming up at the end of the month, the Kamloops NorthPaws are in serious need of billet families to host players set to arrive in the city in the coming weeks.

Club general manager Jenna Forter said the situation has turned “dire.”

“We currently still need 21 beds with our players arriving around May 25,” she said, noting the team has exhausted options like Thompson Rivers University dorms, local hotels and short-term rentals.

“I am hoping that in the next week or two we find some good families and are able to overcome this seemingly difficult challenge.”

Billet families receive tickets and a grocery stipend. They will also be honoured on the field at Norbrock Stadium on Host Families Appreciation Night.

Players will require their own bed and linens, access to a bathroom, laundry facilities, a clean and non-smoking environment, two meals per day when the team is in town and some help with transportation. The team will be on the road for about half the season, which runs through the middle of August.

All players will be required to follow household rules, clean up after themselves and do their own laundry.

Players and host families are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The NorthPaws were announced as an expansion WCL franchise for the 2021 season, but did not play due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The team’s inaugural game is slated for May 31, when the Edmonton Riverhawks will visit Norbrock Stadium.

The WCL is a summer collegiate baseball league, with players coming from rosters of colleges and universities across the U.S. and Canada. Teams play a 54-game schedule with playoffs to follow.
