Panel to review CHL policies on bullying, abuse and hazing

CHL reviews abuse policy

Former NHL'er Sheldon Kennedy, who has shone a bright light on abuse in hockey, will take part in an independent review panel looking at policies and practices around abuse and other issues within the Canadian Hockey League.

The panel, while will be chaired by former New Brunswick Premier Camille Theriault, will review policies and practices relating to hazing, abuse, harassment and bullying within the three major junior league across Canada.

“The CHL is committed to the 1,400 young men who play in our league and the protection of our players has been, and will always be, our primary concern,” said CHL president Dan MacKenzie.

“This is why we have assembled this independent review panel to review the effectiveness of our current policies, player experience programs and procedures for reporting off-ice misconduct, to help ensure that we are providing the safest environment free of hazing, abuse, harassment and bullying.”

The review comes a month after former Lethbridge Hurricane players Daniel Carcillo and Garrett Taylor filed a lawsuit alleging decades of abuse, hazing and harassment of underage players.

In announcing the review panel, the CHL says the three member leagues, WHL, OHL and QMJHL have made several advancements players first programs over the last 20 years, including policies and practices to educate players and staff on respect, prevention of hazing, abuse, harassment and bullying.

A report is expected to be complete by the start of the 2020-2021 season.
