Oilers sign Holland as GM

The Edmonton Oilers confirmed the signing of Vernon's Ken Holland Tuesday as general manager and president of hockey operations.

It was the worst-kept secret in the NHL Monday, as most media outlets were reporting the agreement with the signing to be made official today.

"When I think about the Edmonton Oilers and the players, this franchise and the fan base, I just think there's an opportunity here for me to try to make a real positive impact," Holland said in an interview with NHL.com.

Holland joined the Detroit Red Wings organization as a goalie in 1983 and was with the team through dynasties and disasters. He hopes to bring a stabilizing presence to an Oilers team that has underperformed in recent years despite great success in the draft lotteries and the emergence of superstar Connor McDavid.

He needs to hire a coach, get ready for the June draft and break out the abacus to decipher what he can spend on players under a salary cap pinch.

It was reported that Holland signed for $5 million a year for five years, but terms of the deal were not officially released.
