Locals medal at games

Kelowna athletes have found the podium at the International Children's Winter Games going on in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Cross Country skier Sofie Steinruck and biathlete Timur McNern both won a pair of medals this week.

Steinruck won bronze in the girls 3.5 kiloemtre classic in a time of seven minutes, 30.2 seconds, 46 seconds behind the winner. She also captured silver in the mixed relay with her partner Cameron Scacheri from Cleveland, Ohio.

Nathan Achtem was seventh in the boys 3.5 kilometre race and eighth in the sprint.

Steinruck finished 9th in the sprint, while Kaelin Urness finished 12th.

McNern won a silver medal in the 3.5 kilometre biathlon, finishing in seven minutes, 59.9 seconds.

He was the bronze medalist in the sprint race in three minutes, 45.2 seconds. Enzo Fershau was seventh in the classic and fifth in the sprint.

The girls hockey team finished fifth after just failing to qualify for the medal round.

The Kelowna team finished 2-2 in the round robin, before beating Akureyri, Iceland 5-0 and Penticton 3-1 in the consolation round.

The International Children's Games is a city against city competition.

It is open to those cities who have hosted the games in previous years.

Kelowna hosted the winter event in 2011.

The summer games will be held later this year is Ufa, Russia.
