Seattle's NHL bid approved

Seattle has been approved as the NHL’s 32nd franchise.

The decision was made official Tuesday after the current 31 owners unanimously voted in favour of Seattle’s expansion bid.

Play is expected to begin in 2021, depending on the progress of arena renovations at KeyArena, which famously served as the home of the Seattle Supersonics from 1967 to 2008.

Seattle's ownership group led by billionaire David Bonderman, including Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer, will pay an expansion fee of $US650 million.

The Vegas Golden Knights paid $500 million when they joined the league in 2016.

Seattle will play in the Pacific Division, meaning the Arizona Coyotes will move to the Central Division.

Details regarding the team's name, logo, and color scheme are not yet known.
