Serwa positive post surgery

You'd be hard pressed to find a more positive person than Kelsey Serwa.

Really, she'd have plenty to be bummed about, if she was so inclined.

Serwa, the reigning Olympic silver medalist and 2011 and 2016 Winter X Games champion in women's ski cross, is heading back to the World Cup circuit following her third knee operation.

She suffered the latest injury in competition a year ago, but says the knee is strong, and she's ready to go.

"It's great, it's a non-issue. I don't even think about it, honestly," said Serwa, prior to leaving for Canada's training camp in Austria.

"I've been rehabbing it. I had surgery at the end of December, so I've had lots of time to get it strong, back to where it needs to be in order to withstand all the forces I put it through in the winter."

Now 28, with 16 World Cup podiums, a world championships, along with Olympic and X Game medals under her belt, Serwa could have been excused if she decided to call it a career instead of enduring another long rehab.

That's not Kelsey Serwa.

"I've never been a person who just settles for good or OK, or, just because I've accomplished one thing I'm not going to sit on my butt the rest of my life.

"I've never been that type of person. I always see myself growing and improving, and I think that's been one of the things that has really helped my resiliency and grit in coming back time-and-time again."

Serwa said she's not through with the sport by a long shot, and feels she still has improvements to make.

She added the injuries have allowed her to focus on other aspects of her life, like school. Serwa is enrolled at UBC Okanagan and hopes to eventually start a career in physiotherapy once her racing days are over.

Serwa, and the rest of the Canadian team are off to Austria this week for their final training session before the start of the World Cup season.

The new season begins in Val Thorens, France Dec. 7 to 9. They then move on to Arosa, Switzerland Dec 11 and 12 and Montafon, Austria.

Serwa hopes to have enough success early in the season to be selected to represent Canada at the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.

She finished second in a World Cup race there in February of 2016.

The team will be selected in January.
