Say Au Revoir To Andre

Andre Agassi lost Monday in the first round of the French Open to a qualifier from France ranked 271st - an upset that rivals the biggest in Grand Slam history. Jerome Haehnel, playing his first tour-level match at age 23, beat Agassi 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-3. Looking lethargic and tentative, Agassi was bidding for his 800th match victory, but instead Haehnel improved to 1-0 lifetime.

  • It's an unlikely Stanley Cup matchup beginning Tuesday night with the Calgary Flames and Tampa Bay Lightning. While the Flames are making their first NHL final appearance in 15 years, Tampa is making its debut. Lightning captain Dave Andreychuk has played more regular season games (1,597) than any other active player without appearing in the Cup final.
  • For Michael Schumacher, next weekend can't come soon enough. Schumacher's bid for a season-opening sixth straight victory ended with a caution-period crash Sunday in the Monaco Grand Prix.
  • Michelle Wie received a special exemption Monday to play in the U.S. Women's Open, the first time an amateur has been given a free pass to the biggest tournament in women's golf. Wie, a 14-year-old from Hawaii who just finished the ninth grade, has become one of the biggest attractions in golf.
  • Real Madrid fired coach Carlos Queiroz on Monday and replaced him with former coach Jose Antonio Camacho. Madrid president Florentino Perez also said it had signed Argentina's Walter Samuel from AS Roma for 25 million euros ($40 million Cdn).
