Villeneuve Back In F-1: Report

  • Former Formula One champion Jacques Villeneuve could be racing for the Williams-BMW team in next month's Canadian Grand Prix. According to a report in Friday's Montreal La Presse, the native of Iberville, Que., is set for a return with his former team, and could be taking tests runs on European tracks early next month. "Everything is possible," Patrick Head, the team's technical director, told the newspaper. "From what I understand, Jacques Villeneuve never officially retired."
  • Max Mosley says unless major changes are made to the way Formula One operates, he can see the day when even Ferrari would think twice about its future in the sport. The FIA president says rising costs will drive some manufacturers out of the sport and even Ferrari boss Luca Di Montezemolo admitted late last month that once the Concorde Agreement expires at the end of 2007, Ferrari will have to re-evaluate its future in F1.
  • A federal judge has again denied bail for St. Louis Blues player Mike Danton, ordering him Friday to remain jailed until his trial on charges that he tried to arrange to have his agent slain.
  • There aren't any trophies left for Rimouski Oceanic centre Sidney Crosby to win in major junior hockey this season after running away with most of the Canadian Hockey League's big individual awards. The 16-year-old phenom from Cole Harbour, N.S., was named to the CHL's first all-star team and rookie team on Friday as chosen by NHL Central Scouting.
  • The Boston Red Sox signed first baseman-designated hitter David Ortiz to a $12.5 million US, two-year contract extension Friday that includes a club option for a third season.
  • Mike Montgomery left Stanford to take the coaching job with the Golden State Warriors on Friday. Montgomery, 57, replaces Eric Musselman, who was fired Wednesday night after two seasons. His deal is reportedly a four-year, multimillion-dollar contract.
  • Australia edged Argentina 2-1 Friday to reach the World Team Cup final against defending champion Chile.
  • Lance Armstrong finished 39th Friday during the third stage of the Languedoc-Roussillon cycling race, a tuneup for his July attempt at a sixth straight Tour de France title.
