Salmon Arm RCMP nab train-hopping thief linked to stolen Jeep in Kelowna

Abandons Jeep, hops train

A Jeep stolen from Kelowna Monday morning was found in Salmon Arm by RCMP the same afternoon.

Police credit an observant bystander for helping with the investigation.

“A person in the area captured a video of the male driver leaving the Jeep,” says Staff Sgt. Scott West.

The Jeep had been abandoned at the end of 70th Ave. NE and, when police arrived, they found a stolen e-bike inside.

More help from the public alerted Canadian Pacific Rail to a man seen hopping on a train.

The observer alerted CP and, in turn, Canadian Pacific reported the possible hitchhiker to police, “who then began to look for the male near the tracks at local points where the train stopped or slowed to a near stop in Salmon Arm,” says West.

Police say the man with a “distinctive description” was found and arrested on the west side of Salmon Arm.

The suspect has been released as police continue to investigate.

The man faces possible charges of theft of a vehicle, theft under $5,000, and hitchhiking under the Railway Safety Act.
