Official referendum results show incorporation soundly defeated in Sorrento and Blind Bay

Referendum results official

Official results have confirmed Sorrento and Blind Bay residents' opposition to incorporation.

Preliminary results released Sunday showed a sound defeat for the creation of a new municipality.

More detailed official numbers released today show a total of 2,027 voters said no to incorporation and just 272 were in favour.

A breakdown of votes shows 91 mail-in ballots opposed and 13 in favour.

Advance polls on April 20 saw 727 voters against incorporation and 57 in support.

The gap widened on general voting day, April 30.

At Sorrento Memorial Hall, 418 were opposed, 53 in favour.

Voting at the Blind Bay Memorial Hall saw the largest area of support for incorporation, with 149 in favour; 791 were opposed.

"The results indicate that residents, based on the projected impacts, do not believe that incorporation is in the best interest of the community at this time. Residents clearly prefer to remain unincorporated," the Columbia Shuswap Regional District said in a press release.

The projected population of the area is approximately 5,600 people.

"The turnout clearly showed the level of interest in the community and that they appreciated the chance to have their say on this important decision," said chief election officer Jennifer Sham.

The CSRD will now proceed with the default option of dividing Electoral Area C into two separate electoral areas, each to be represented by its own elected director.

That process will take place as part of the Oct. 15 local government elections.
