A Shuswap elementary school was fined a total of $1,700 for environmental infractions.
Two fines, of $800 and $900 were issued to Sorrento Elementary for failure to comply with an effluent permit.
North Okanagan-Shuswap School District spokesperson Alice Hucul says: "The two fines are to do with the monitoring of the septic system at Sorrento Elementary."
The school's septic system is on a permit that specifies that monthly dip tests must be done, as well as groundwater elevation tests, and the amount of effluent flow must not exceed a specified level.
"Over the years, the school has typically reached no more than 25 per cent of this flow level," says Hucul.
SD 83 was fined $800 for not sending an annual report and having an unapproved method of measuring effluent flow, and $900 for failing to take the required amount of dip tests throughout the year.
District operations staff are working with Ministry of Environment to be in compliance with the terms of the permit, Hucul added.
The penalties were listed on the provincial government environmental compliance report web page.
The site states the district was issued two administrative penalties as it "failed to conduct sampling and monitoring as required by the permit on numerous occasions between 2018 and 2021."
