Salmon Arm

River to crest again

A flood warning will remain in place for the Salmon Valley area as another peak in river flows is expected this week.

The River Forecast Centre says a high-pressure system is producing higher than normal hot weather conditions, resulting in rapid snowpack melt.

The Salmon River is currently flowing at 58 to 59 cubic metres per second, down from a peak reached last week of 77.7 m3/s. The extreme hot weather is anticipated to increase river levels to last week’s peak or higher, the Columbia Shuswap Regional District advises.

The Shuswap Emergency Program advises residents along the river to prepare and protect their property. River levels are likely to rise during the night.

Approach water crossings, such as bridges, carefully as the approach may be undermined, keep away from river banks and move animals to higher ground.

If you require support, including sand and sandbags, contact the Shuswap Emergency Program at 250-832-2424.
