Cop shoots, faces charges

A member of the Salmon Arm RCMP may face charges in relation to a  2015 shooting of a suspect following a reported armed robbery near Sicamous.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC, said in a report the “Chief Civilian Director completed a review of this file and submitted a report to Crown Counsel for consideration of charges.

“This investigation relates to serious injuries suffered by a male affected person who was shot during an interaction with a member of Salmon Arm RCMP on July 3, 2015.”

At approximately 5 p.m. Friday July 3, officers responded to a complaint of an armed robbery involving an adult male at a gas station near Sicamous.

The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle which was located in Canoe, just outside of Salmon Arm a short time later. Officers set up a perimeter and deployed a police service dog and handler to establish a track.

During the search, an officer came into contact with the suspect. The suspect was shot and sustained serious injuries. An officer was also injured during the confrontation. Both were transported to hospital for medical treatment.

According to the IIO report, “Pursuant to the Police Act, the CCD must refer a file to Crown Counsel for consideration of charges if the CCD identifies that an officer may have committed an offence under any enactment. In approving charges, Crown Counsel must be satisfied not only that an offence may have been committed, but that the commission of an offence can be proven in court beyond a reasonable doubt.”
