Poll: Downtown The Heart?

This weekend we're posting some poll questions suggested to us by Castanet readers. This one comes from Cherie Hanson who suggests the following:

"Most downtown areas are considered "the heart" of a city. Is Kelowna's downtown "the heart" of Kelowna?"

Of course, Cherie's question comes against a considerable background with the following top of mind:

The mega-project (formally known as Pandosy Landing) went to the Advisory Planning Commission (APC) last week. The non-binding citizen's committee recommended City Council not approve the project. Many who spoke felt the 28 storey tower was just too tall for the downtown.

There have been continued problems reported with revitalizing downtown. Some point to the social service agencies and bars concentrated on Leon Avenue as well as the open drug use and vagrancy in City Park.

Of course, Saturday was the annual Mardi Gras where downtown business merchants welcomed the city with a carnival atmosphere, entertainment, lots to eat, and interesting things to look at or buy.
