NDP Leader Jack Layton is accusing Paul Martin of breaking a vow made during the Liberal leadership race that the Liberals would go into the election with the largest number of female candidates ever.
According to Equal Voice, a lobby group focused on electing more women, 25 per cent of Liberal candidates are women compared with 28 per cent in the 1997 election.
Women represent 30 per cent of the NDP's candidates 26 per cent of the Bloc's and 11 per cent of the Conservatives'. Two of the six candidates appointed directly by Mr. Martin have been women.
It is rumoured that an election call will take May 23, for a vote on June 28.
