Penticton Council decided on a by-election date of Sept. 7 at Tuesday's meeting.
Other dates in the running were Sept. 28 and Oct. 19. But after some debate, the council went with the earliest.
Councillors Andrew Jakubeit and Judy Sentes voted against the Sept. 7 date, stating they worried abut an election taking place during the tourist season.
Jakubeit was concerned about election signs appearing when there are still events in town and the fact children will be going back to school at that time.
But others on the council felt it was important to set the earlier date.
"In the interest of stability of government, I think we need to deal with this as quickly as possible," said acting mayor Garry Litke. "There is a lot of community interest. People are looking for sooner than later."
Former Mayor Dan Ashton resigned from the council in early June. He is now MLA for the Penticton riding.
Litke has announced he intends to run for mayor, meaning he will be required to resign from the council. That is expected to take place in the near future.
