Small earthquake near Penticton

An explosion that alarmed residents of Penticton Friday morning is believed to be the result of a small earthquake.

According to Natural Resources Canada, a magnitude 2 earthquake occurred about 17 kilometres  west of the city.

"I heard a boom that sounded like it came from underground," said Dennis Laporte, who lives on Wilton Crescent. "I thought it was a meteor or a pipe that blew up, so I called the gas company, then 911, and firefighters and the police showed up."

Penticton Deputy Fire Chief Dave Spalding said they responded to reports of an explosion at around 10:05 a.m. in the 700 block of Carmi Avenue.

Firefighters did not find anything at the location.

After learning there was a seismic event around the same time, they believe the explosion was related to that.
