Community advocate vies for council

A longtime community advocate is the first official candidate in the upcoming by-election in Penticton.

Lynn Kelsey previously ran for council in 2011, because she felt she could bring a fresh and intelligent perspective to issues. Following that effort, she announced she would run again in 2014.

"I feel it is important for me to take the opportunity now presented by the by-election," she said. "I am committed to making Penticton a better place for all without losing the amazing ambiance of the city. We need to bring jobs to Penticton for our young people and I also feel that city council needs to be transparent in their decisions."

For the past nine years, Kelsey has worked for the South Okanagan Women in Need Society as a woman's support worker, supporting women and children, who have left abusive situations.

She is also involved with Patient Voices Network, as a patient  advocate sitting at the table for change in healthcare, including  being involved from the outset with the Diabetes Strategy group.

She is a musician and performer and treasurer for the South Okanagan  Boundary Labour Council.

The position on the council became available when former Mayor Dan Ashton resigned earlier this month. Ashton is now MLA for the Penticton riding.

Acting Mayor Garry Litke has said he will run, making for two open positions in the by-election.

The council will discuss the by-election at their next meeting, July 2. There is no formal date set for it.
