Longest tunnel on KVR burning

Smoke will be visible for days to come due to a wildfire burning inside the historic Adra Tunnel on the Kettle Valley Railway.

A forest officer responded to and located the fire confined within the Adra Tunnel on Sunday, May 30.

It is believed the wildfire originated inside the tunnel, however, conditions are too dangerous for officials to enter and confirm the cause.

Wildfire crews will not extinguish the blaze due to safety concerns about smoke inhalation and the tunnel’s structural instability, but the B.C. Wildfire Management Branch is monitoring the situation to ensure the fire does not spread.

For information about the tunnel and its history, please contact the Kettle Valley Railway Society at (250) 494-8422.

The B.C. Forest Service wishes to thank the public for its cooperation in continuing to report wildfires. Almost half of all fires in B.C. are reported by the public. If you see smoke or flames, please call 5555 on your cell or toll free to 1-800-663-5555. For further information about current conditions, visit www.bcwildfire.ca.
