South Okanagan photographer wins public favourite for photo captured on Vaseux Lake in Canadian contest

Local wins in photo contest

A South Okanagan photographer claimed a top prize in a Canadian photo contest with an image of a bird on Vaseux Lake.

Of 450 photo submissions from across Canada, Adam Benn won Public Favourite in the Lake Biodiversity category for his image of a cedar waxwing at Vaseux Lake Bird Observatory.

Over 1,200 voters decided on the winning images.

Living Lakes Canada, a water science non-profit, partnered with Canadian Conservation Photographers Collective for the contest.

The Lake Biodiversity Photo Challenge is in its fourth year running, celebrating "lakes across Canada and raises awareness around what’s threatening their incredible biodiversity."

Organizers said this year's photo contest showcased each lake's unique features. Contestants were encouraged to ensure well being for their environment and wildlife while taking pictures.

"Public Favourite winners and Judges’ Favourite winners were selected in each of the four categories: Lake Landscapes, Lake Biodiversity, Lake Impacts and Youth category, for a total of eight winning shots from across BC, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec," reads a Living Lakes Canada press release.

Next to Benn, Tracey Halladay of East Kootenays won Public Favourite in the Lake Impacts category with a lake photo post-wildfire.

Winners received an online photography workshop with professional photographers Viktoria Haak, the Nikon Canada Ambassador, and Kase Filter the Global Ambassador.
