New PIB chief to be elected this week

Residents of the Penticton Indian Band vote this week for their new chief.

Back in mid-September, Chief Stewart Philip announced he’d be stepping down, but says the band works with it’s residents on making any decisions.

“The leadership of the PIB is reflected within the people themselves, the elders and the members of our community. All decisions are made in the community hall,” says Phillip.

He says there are six people running for chief, Johnathon Kruger, Greg Gabriel, Elaine Alex, Lavern Jack, Howard Gabriel and Pieree Kruger.

Advance voting was held over the weekend, with general voting to be held on Wednesday.

It’s been a busy autumn for the PIB as they hosted the Okanagan Nations Business Opportunities Conference earlier this month and also took part in the signing of the educational agreement between UBCO and the Aboriginal Access Program.
