'It's exciting': Women of Slackwater Brewing in Penticton celebrate fourth annual brew that gives back to females in the industry

Brew beer, help women

Slackwater Brewing in Penticton had an all-female team at the helm Thursday, getting started on their fourth annual Pink Boots Society brew in support of women in the industry.

The women of Slackwater and, in some cases, their kids, gathered to create something special, made from the special Yakima Chief Hops blend they purchase from the Pink Boots Society every year.

$3 from every bag of hops purchased goes toward scholarships to help women break barriers in the beverage industry, a cause near and dear to Slackwater co-founder Kelsey Peyton's heart.

Her young twin daughters were at Slackwater with her Thursday for brew day.

"It's actually their second Pink Boots day, the first time they were only about four weeks old," Peyton said.

"It's important to me to show them that as girls, as women, they can do and be anything."

Many other female members of the Slackwater team were also there, helping bring together this year's brew. It will be a Kolsch-style beer, and Peyton said they are leaning into the taste of the hops.

It has yet to be given an official name, pending consultation with all of the Slackwater ladies, but it will be available for sale by International Women's Day on March 8, on liquor store shelves around the Okanagan and beyond.

"It's exciting to have been a part of this for four years," Peyton said.
