Thieves in Penticton targeted Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen vehicles this weekend

Thieves hit RDOS vehicles

Four Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen vehicles were targeted by thieves this weekend, who stole catalytic converters.

RDOS Parks vehicles near the Campbell Mountain landfill in Penticton were impacted. Sometime between Saturday, Jan. 14 at 3:30 p.m. and Monday, Jan. 16 at 7 a.m., the culprit or culprits cut through a fence to gain access to the site and stole the vehicles' parts.

RCMP and ICBC are involved. ICBC says theft of catalytic converters, a part of a vehicle's exhaust system, has risen due to an increase in the price of precious metals contained within them.

It is expected the vehicles will be out of commission for several weeks.

"Service of RDOS parks, including snow removal in parking lots and along pathways and pedestrian corridors, may be impacted in the communities of West Bench, Naramata, Kaleden, Okanagan Falls and other areas," reads a news release from the RDOS Tuesday.

Security measures have been increased at the site, including additional lighting and video surveillance and active patrols.
