Condemned tunnel on KVR trail above Naramata being studied for reopen

Condemned tunnel to open?

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen says it is investigating whether it can reopen the historic Adra Tunnel on the KVR Trail above Naramata.

The 483-metre, horseshoe-curved tunnel was originally excavated in 1913 as part of the development of the Kettle Valley Railway. Rail operations ceased in the 1970s and the provincial government purchased the rail bed in 1990.

The Adra Tunnel was closed in the early 90s due to the unstable conditions and fires deliberately set in the tunnel in 2010 and 2012 destroyed all remaining timber supports, further deteriorating stability.

The RDOS says it is now collaborating with local contractors and Rec Sites and Trails BC to clear debris, complete a rock structure survey and develop plans for stabilizing the tunnel.

“The RDOS believes the tunnel if reopened, will bring long-term benefits to residents, tourists, and local businesses,” says Electoral Area “E” Director Karla Kozakevich.

The KVR trail's "Little Tunnel" in Naramata draws many visitors for its spectacular views.

The RDOS says any future reopening will be contingent on whether it is technically and financially feasible to do so in a way that is safe for trail users.

Crews will begin accessing the Adra Tunnel mid-September. The existing tunnel bypass will remain open to trail users.
