Penticton fire reminds residents to check smoke alarms after tackling a structure fire on Wednesday night

Smoke alarms didn't go off

UPDATE: 2:10 p.m.

After Penticton fire crews tackled a house fire on Wednesday night, Fire Chief Larry Watkinson noted that this is an important time for a reminder to keep alarms active.

"I think the safety message is to have working smoke alarms. When we arrived on scene, there was no indication that the smoke alarms were going off," he said, adding it is a key player in early indication to get your family out safely.

"Also activate the 911 system too, so the fire has less of an opportunity to grab a hold of the home."

Residents should check their smoke alarms and change the batteries every six months.

The fire will be investigated starting on Friday to determine the cause of the fire, but it is not believed to be suspicious at this time.
