The Polar Bear Dip will be back in Summerland this year to kick off 2022.
At Sunoka Beach, 12 p.m. New Year's Day, participants and spectators will gather for the 36th annual dip, sponsored by the Kinsmen Club of Summerland.
Attendance is by donation, and all proceeds will go to local families and community projects.
Divers from PenSAR will be in the water to keep an eye on everyone, and participants will be asked to adhere to latest provincial COVID-19 guidelines and practice social distancing.
Warming fires, hot dogs, hot chocolate and event shirts will be available, but organizers note that individual and group costume prizes have been removed from this year's event.
"The last few Polar Bear Dips have had fairly mild weather, but it looks like a cold one for this year. Regardless, I always love this event due to its unpredictability and shared traditions in our community," said Frederik Numsen, Summerland Kinsmen president.
