A Summerland homeowner was surprised to see two black bears on her property for a visit, plunking themselves right in front of a security camera on Thursday morning.

A single black bear first showed up on Wednesday night at around 7:30 p.m. The homeowner had come through the family room to tend to the wood stove and heard a noise.

"I looked over at the patio door and saw the black bear disappearing. I turned on the outside light to see the black bear scamper up the mountain behind my house. From the time that I saw him scamper away until the property camera picked him up in the early hours of the morning, he had found a traveling companion," they shared with Castanet over messenger.

"I was very surprised to view the captured video this morning of the two bears frolicking. What are the odds that the bear decided to attend to an itch right in front of the property camera!"

Bear sightings have reached record numbers throughout the Okanagan this summer. According to WildSafeBC, there were 168 black bear reports in the Kelowna Region, a new record high.

Vernon had 24 black bear reports in August and 57 (record high) in September with the averages being 17 and 24 respectively. Penticton and area had 26 black bear reports in August and 38 in September. These were also above the averages of 11 and 27 but not record setting.

People can report wildlife sightings to the BC Conservation Officer Service 24/7 call centre at 1-877-952-7277.
