Penticton presenting builders, designers and developers tips to FireSmart within their projects

FireSmart tips for builders

Penticton's FireSmart team is hoping to see future homes and buildings built to withstand the wildfire-prone environment, encouraging builders, designers and developers to learn more on the best practices for safe builds.

The extremely volatile fire season this summer led to the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen seeing significant interest in their FireSmart programs as residents want to protect their homes and neighbourhoods. The City of Penticton ran a free FireSmart program throughout the summer to help residents prepare and protect their homes.

"Builders, designers and developers play a crucial role within the FireSmart program as the homes, buildings and subdivisions that are created can be affected by wildfire differently dependent on choices made. These choices include building materials, building designs, landscaping and more," Miyoko McKeown, FireSmart Team Lead explained.

The city will be hosting FireSmart 101: Builders and Developers on Nov. 3 to guide people through the best practices while building. The presentation starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre and is free to attend.

So far, 25 attendees have signed up from varying builder and developer businesses around Penticton.
