Penticton's Pathways Addictions Resource Centre forging ahead with new counselling programming despite funding setbacks

Pathways forging ahead

Pathways Addictions Resource Centre is resuming group counselling sessions following a difficult summer sorting out how to proceed after losing their Interior Health funding.

The centre has since moved to a fee-for-service model, and are now ready to welcome both individuals and groups back to access their services.

But funding challenges persist. Interior Health announced in spring 2021 that they were moving addictions counselling services in-house, giving Pathways notice that as of May 31, they would no longer receive the provincial funding that made up 95 per cent of their annual budget.

Penticton city council has recently rejected a motion to explore a special funding partnership with the municipality.

Pathways has continued despite the setbacks, but relies heavily on donations to operate. Fee-for-service is often not a viable option for many individuals and groups who need access to the work Pathways offers.

They have a "Give a Gift of Service" program, which allows community members to donate directly to help people access Pathways services who can't afford to pay. Donations can be made in person, by mail or online here.

New group counselling services launching this month include:

  • Recovery for Newcomers: starts Oct. 23 and is for those who are contemplating or are in the early stages of recovery. The group will cover developing an understanding of the process of recovery, anxiety, depression, post- acute withdrawal symptoms, suggest options for growth and change, and identify community resources that can assist those in recovery. It will take place on Tuesday afternoons at Pathways from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. and will cost a total of $90 for six weeks. Fee subsidy available.
  • Recovery: Moving Along: starts Oct. 15 and is for people moving forward from the early stages of recovery. This group is appropriate for those who are action-oriented and are willing to work on acceptance and commitment, establishing values and goals, and continued relapse prevention techniques. It will take place on Friday afternoons at Pathways from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. and will cost a total of $90 for six weeks. Fee subsidy available.
  • Life Over the Influence: starts Oct. 12 and is specifically for family and friends who are affected by a loved one’s substance use. The goals of the group are enhanced well-being, reduced isolation tendencies, and increased understanding of substance use in a stigma-free and safe environment. It will be Tuesday evenings from 5:30-7:30. The cost of this group is $180 for six weeks. Fee subsidy available.

Pathways hopes to continue to grow its group counselling programs, including outpatient treatment for women and art therapy.
