Student vote for South Okanagan-West Kootenay elects NDP Richard Cannings

Students 'elect' Cannings

Students across the nation participated in voting process for local candidates in their school’s riding for Federal Election Day on Monday.

In the South Okanagan-West Kootenay, 42 schools participated in the riding vote and the results are similar to the voting public's own votes. While the final tally of mail-in ballots is still being counted, the final count of the Student Vote Election is complete.

NDP Richard Cannings was elected with 1,976 total votes, receiving 40.82 per cent of the votes. This percentage was similar to the results of the riding, with 41 per cent of the vote.

Conservative candidate Helena Konanz received 20.24 per cent of the vote, earning 980 votes. In official riding results, Konanz received 35.2 per cent of the vote.

Green Party candidate Tara Howse came in third in the student vote instead of last with the public vote, earning 842 votes or 17.39 per cent of the support.

Sean Taylor with the PPC received greater support form students, earning 550 votes with 11.36 per cent. Liberal Ken Roberston received the least amount of student votes, with 493, just 10.18 per cent.

For the national student vote, the Liberal Party would have received 118 seats across Canada, followed by 106 for the NDP, 88 for the Conservatives, 21 for the Bloc Quebecois and three for the Green Party.
