Competitors coming to run, hike, swim, climb and mountain bike through Penticton with the Adventure Racing World Series

'Gruelling' race coming

A multi-day non-stop adventure race will be competing through Penticton as a part of the Adventure Race World Series (ARWS).

Expedition Canada is a 403 km long gruelling race challenging participants with trekking/trail running, orienteering on foot, mountain biking, paddling, swimming and rope climbing through the hills, expecting most runners to finish in two and half days.

The course will be open for just over four days in order to give less experienced teams a chance to finish an Expedition race. 68 extreme athletes will have to navigate by map and compass only, no GPS allowed.

There will be no mandatory stops and no optional controls.

Teams of four are set up with tracking devices and a live tracking feed for friends and family to follow as well as daily pictures and videos posted during the race.

While Expedition Canada 2021 has been postponed twice due to COVID-19, the small participant size numbers of the event has allowed it to go ahead in nine days.

“But don’t let the size of this event fool you, this small event has huge meaning for the region. After this first demo race, Expedition Canada will become a qualifier for ARWS and will grow and return annually as the only Canadian destination in the series,” the press release reads.

Currently ARWS races are hosted in 17 countries around the world and bring millions of eyes internationally to the areas that host them.

The racecourses aren’t released to the teams until just hours before the race.

A media team will also follow the racers throughout the course allowing spectators from anywhere around the world to watch the "dots" online and see the footage of Okanagan terrain, discovering the region through the live video of the event.

The race kicks off at 7 a.m., Sept. 29 at Okanagan Lake, with the start line location released early that morning.

To watch the race live follow www.expeditionracecanada.ca or on social media @expeditioncanada.
