Penticton Museum & Archives and the En’owkin Centre opening exhibit on Indigenous languages in BC

Learn Indigenous languages

Learn more about the history and present of Indigenous peoples' voices in British Columbia, with the Our Living Languages exhibit.

The Penticton Museum & Archives and the En’owkin Centre announced the opening of the new exhibit, which tells the story of how the Indigenous peoples in the province are striving to ensure the survival of their languages and culture.

BC is home to 34 unique Indigenous languages, which represents 60 per cent of the total number of First Peoples languages spoken in Canada.

To complement the provincial scope of the exhibit, the Penticton Museum has worked closely with the En’owkin Centre.

The exhibit will feature content specific to the Syilx (Okanagan) people and the ongoing efforts of the En’owkin Centre to promote, teach and preserve the Syilx language.

The En’owkin Centre was established in 1981 and continues to run as a cultural, educational, ecological and creative arts organization for the Syilx people. The exhibit will honour four people who in the past made significant contributions to preserve and promote the nsyilxcn language.

Our Living Languages will run through to Sep. 30. Please join the En’owkin centre and the Penticton Museum & Archives for a fascinating and timely look at an issue that affects us all.

A special opening event will be held for invited guests and press on July 21 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. To sign up and RSVP for opening day, contact the En’owkin Centre at 250-770-0124.
