Youth addictions recovery centre in Keremeos closing

Key addiction centre closing

An addictions recovery centre for youth in Keremeos is shutting down at the end of the month after the agency that runs it decided not to submit a new proposal for government funding.

Pacific Community Resources has run Ashnola at the Crossing since 2017. The 22-bed recovery centre helps youth aged 17 to 24 with their addictions, with stays ranging from weeks to months.

Their contract expires at the end of the month, and the PHSA informed PCRS that they would be putting the contract out to tender, providing a Request for Proposal (RFP).

In a news release, PCRS said that "despite operating this critical program for the past four years with excellent outcomes, there is new criteria that excludes PCRS from consideration."

"We also believe that the program/staffing model and associated funding levels, and other contractual obligations outlined in the RFP are insufficient to establish and maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for participants which is not in alignment with our agency values," continues the press release.

"As a result, and with a heavy heart, PCRS will not be submitting a response to the RFP. We look forward to a smooth transition and rapid re-opening of a program that will continue to offer this important service to youth and young adults in B.C."

Unless the PHSA receives an appropriate proposal from another operator for Ashnola, the closure could be permanent.

Ashnola at the Crossing is one of precious few youth treatment centres throughout the province, despite a desperate need.
