Grass fire sparked near Oliver Saturday afternoon

A grass fire in Oliver has been extinguished, after starting at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

The fire, off Tucelnuit Dr north of the NkMip Canyon Desert Golf Course, burned an area of about 300 by 500 feet, before the Oliver Fire Department arrived on scene just before 2 p.m. and extinguished the blaze.

“We have everything contained and extinguished. We're currently in mop-up phase and just extinguishing hot spots,” said Rob Graham with the Oliver Fire Department.

“We did have a lot of sage brush on fire, in an area with a lot of tall grass and brush. There were two power poles in the area that we were able to keep from going up.”

Graham said a possible cause of the fire is still unknown at this time.
